Peripheral Blood Stem Cells (PBSCs)
Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells, found throughout the body after embryonic development, that multiply by cell division to replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues. Also known as somatic stem cells (from Greek Σωματικóς, meaning of the body), they can be found in juvenile as well as adult animals and humans.
Scientific interest in adult stem cells has centred on their ability to divide or self-renew indefinitely, and generate all the cell types of the organ from which they originate, potentially regenerating the entire organ from a few cells. Unlike embryonic stem cells, the use of adult stem cells in research and therapy is not considered to be controversial as they are derived from adult tissue samples rather than human embryos.
PBSCs are hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), one kind of adult stem cells which are
hidden inside your bone marrow. The scientists discover the qualities of PBSCs in
adults are the same as in children as if we can use them by the reason they are hidden
inside. PBSCs are circulating in the blood at low levels all the time but can increase in
number dramatically when a person is treated with certain cytokines (substances that
stimulate the bone marrow) such as G-CSF.
The process of autologous PBSCs for rejuvenation
1. Prior to receiving the therapy, health evaluation will be made to make certain that
you are qualified for this procedure. The baseline blood tests should be performed
especially the complete blood counts. G-CSF injection will be given at the dose of 5-
10 micrograms per kg body weight for 4 consecutive days.
2. On day 5 we will collect PBSCs by a process called apheresis. A special machine is
used along with a new sterile kit for each stem cell collection. The kit provides a path
for the blood and has tubing to connect to the needles or catheter. A pump draws
blood out of one large vein and the machine separates out some of the white blood
cells and stem cells. The stem cells and a small amount of plasma are collected in a
bag and the rest of the blood is returned to the patient in the other vein. Blood is
drawn out, separated, and returned in a constant process. From this process you will
get your own stem cells more than 100 millions cells which we will process the
sample in a sterile and kept it at 4 degrees Celsius before use. If the cells are not used
within 7 days after collection, they may be kept frozen in liquid nitrogen for future
use up to more than 10 years.
3. After the apheresis process 3-4 days, the processed the PBSCs sample collected
from your own blood will be injected back into your vein. The period of 3-4 days
allows for your bone marrow to be recovered. The high dose of stem cells given back
in a short period of time makes it possible to initiate the repairing process known as
the engraftment. The visible results are observed after 1-3 weeks. Most individuals
feel more energetic and can sleep better. Significant repairing of damaged organs and
tissues usually take place after two months. The peak effect may be attained after 6
months.
