Comments from patient:  Dr. A.L. Yates

Communications with www.stemcells21.com:

Paperwork expeditiously completed, rationally explained by Mr. Paul Collier, who is a key person at Jai Communications Limited (stemcells21). They were always on hand to make sure that we had all necessary info and that procedures were smoothly expedited as outlined.

Medical/nursing staff:

Medical: The treating doctor is very knowledgeable in the field of cellular medicine and the protocol is very sophisticated. He spends time talking and teaching patients about how stem cells work in our bodies.

Nursing: The nursing staff at the medical centre are delightful and the service is well organized.

Information Given:

All questions we had were answered by the treating doctor, sometimes via the readily available team at Jai Communications, who went out of their way to collect us from the airport at 1am in the morning. The complex treatment schedule was well organized and implemented efficiently.

Accommodation:

We stayed at Centre Point serviced apartments on Wireless Road, close to the medical centre. They had excellent facilities and a brilliant free breakfast every morning.

The experience was far better than I had expected

Update from patient:

The hypothenar eminence on the left seems to be filling out, perhaps 20% better than before I got the treatment.  Arthritic pain and stiffness is somewhat better. What hasn't improved, so far, is the narcolepsy in that the profound need to nap and loss of energy over most of the day seems not to have changed.  I relate the tiredness and lack of motivation to the mitochondria.  'When I'm good, I'm very, very good but when I'm bad, I'm awful (as my mother used to say).'  But it's only the first month, so we'll have to see.

Everything went well because you were the glue that kept it all together.

I was observing Dr. Chatchai's technique closely - he was taking sterile precautions, identified landmarks for placement of the needle, and administered the injection deftly and accurately, pacing the injection itself, slowly as indicated.

Less morning stiffness and improved flexibility but still have joint swelling and pain in digits of left hand.  Best of all, my balance has continued to improve (which translates into postural and gait improvement).  As I mentioned before, my PT independently noted these changes too.

The persistent problem is related to the narcolepsy, which has become worse since the treatment and more resistant to stimulant meds.  However, Provigil (modafinil) still helps me wake up in the morning.  It used to be that I would sleep about 6 hours a night and take 3 naps in the daytime.  Now I sleep 8 hours a night and take 6 or more naps in the daytime, plus I'm very sleepy inbetween with a significant loss of energy, depression, and diminished cognitive function.  I keep telling myself that any change may predict improvement and that no one knew how narcolepsy would or would not respond.

Update from patients: 08/11/09

My news may be good news.  I was able to effortlessly remain awake while I had tooth cleaning and later, dental work done.  First time in years. Usualy I'm out like a light when they lower the headrest. I'm hoping the neural stem cells are churning away.  I'll write more details later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm seeing some positive signs in that my core muscles are not as weak. I have problems sleeping at night but now there seems to be more variability to the pattern.than before, which gives us hope.

The news from my front is very good although it's something like a rollercoaster ride for me.  I'm certainly stronger and my balance is much better - that's the stable improvement.  Sleep pattern has changed dramatically.  In narcolepsy, sleep is typically fragmented with loss of REM and stage 3/4 sleep.  Mine has been fragmented for many years.  I used to wake 6-7x per night and no longer recalled any dreams.  The loss of REM and stage 3/4 sleep was confirmed at the sleep lab.  Now I sleep straight through for 7 hours and can remember some dreams.  Although I still have this uncontrollable need to snooze during the day-time, I take only 2-4 naps per day, about half of what I did before.  I can't think clearly when I'm sleepy and consequently my function is somewhat impaired.  I'm still minimally responsive to stimulant medication - that may take a while to resolve or it may never do so.  I'm very happy about the changes and looking forward to more.

Both of us experience fewer joint aches in general.  My swollen finger joints are definitely less swollen.

As you may surmise, the stem cells started to churn out the good stuff right on schedule.  I was pretty depressed before, thinking that that my age was the problem.  The literature stresses that age is a limiting factor and that us seniors need a greater number of stem cells to have a good effect.  Two to four times as many.  I think this is not such a big problem once its recognized in that the lab can multiply the cells in culture longer before shipping them out.
