After therapy care discussion
The patient was treated at our medical centre in Bangkok, Thailand as an outpatient. Their accommodation was luxury serviced apartments directly opposite the medical centre.
Paperwork expeditiously completed, rationally explained by Mr. Paul Collier, who is a key person at Jai Communications Limited (stemcells21). They were always on hand to make sure that we had all necessary info and that procedures were smoothly expedited as outlined.
Medical/nursing staff:
Medical: The treating doctor is very knowledgeable in the field of cellular medicine and the protocol is very sophisticated. He spends time talking and teaching patients about how stem cells work in our bodies.
Nursing: The nursing staff at the medical centre are delightful and the service is well organized.
Information Given:
All questions we had were answered by the treating doctor, sometimes via the readily available team at Jai Communications, who went out of their way to collect us from the airport at 1am in the morning. The complex treatment schedule was well organized and implemented efficiently.
Accommodation:
We stayed at Centre Point serviced apartments on Wireless Road, close to the medical centre. They had excellent facilities and a brilliant free breakfast every morning.
The experience was far better than I had expected
Dr. A.L.Yates
We will be doing regular follow ups with Dr. Yates on her condition and symptoms. We will update this page as and when new information is collected.
Update from patient: 19/09/09
Karl continues to note less joint pain in fingers and wrists, where he received injections. He is very happy with the dental work and might want to go back in the future. As for me, the hypothenar eminence on the left seems to be filling out, perhaps 20% better than before I got the treatment. Arthritic pain and stiffness is somewhat better. What hasn't improved, so far, is the narcolepsy in that the profound need to nap and loss of energy over most of the day seems not to have changed. I relate the tiredness and lack of motivation to the mitochondria. 'When I'm good, I'm very, very good but when I'm bad, I'm awful (as my mother used to say).' But it's only the first month, so we'll have to see.
Karl says everything went well because you were the glue that kept it all together. I agree.
I was observing Dr. Chatchai's technique closely - he was taking sterile precautions, identified landmarks for placement of the needle, and administered the injection deftly and accurately, pacing the injection itself, slowly as indicated.
Update from patients: 13/10/09
Karl has had a good resolution of all his eye problems - scratchiness and inability to adjust to contacts, frequent changes in refraction, loss of vision in the eye that had had optic neuropathy. He's quite pleased.
For Alayne, less morning stiffness and improved flexibility but still have joint swelling and pain in digits of left hand. Best of all, my balance has continued to improve (which translates into postural and gait improvement). As I mentioned before, my PT independently noted these changes too.
The persistent problem is related to the narcolepsy, which has become worse since the treatment and more resistant to stimulant meds. However, Provigil (modafinil) still helps me wake up in the morning. It used to be that I would sleep about 6 hours a night and take 3 naps in the daytime. Now I sleep 8 hours a night and take 6 or more naps in the daytime, plus I'm very sleepy inbetween with a significant loss of energy, depression, and diminished cognitive function. I keep telling myself that any change may predict improvement and that no one knew how narcolepsy would or would not respond.
Lori : Diabetes, Retinopathy and optic neuropathy (blindness)
Diabetic Canadian Pins Hopes on Sight from Stem Cells
Chapter One. 15 June, 2009 Just a month ago Loredana from Toronto sat in the lounge of her hotel in Bangkok talking about her story. At only 24 years of age this intelligent, articulate young woman who’s been diabetic for 22 years doesn’t accept she’s meant to be blind.
Having been told by her doctor, ‘That’s it, I can do nothing else. You’re going to be blind’, this is her last hope. Sadly, in spite of having nothing to offer her the specialist was adamantly opposed to her having stem cell therapy. On one eye she has endured ten operations and on the other seven, in a vain attempt to halt the progress of her diabetes. What was she to do?
Rather than accept what she’d been told, Lori searched for a realistic chance of help and discovered the stories and the science of adult stem cell therapy. Then she had to raise the money to fly, for the first time, half way around the world for care.
Her uncle, close relatives, friends and business associates of her family made her trip possible. At a meeting one night her uncle said, ‘I want to do it’. And so started a series of meetings resulting firstly in an organized bus tour to a casino under the slogan ‘Hope 4 Sight’, which raised a few thousand dollars. Then he launched a banquet for 500 people who each paid $100 to attend. Many prizes were donated and her parents’ business network particularly helped make it all possible. Prizes included a trip to the Bahamas, a laptop and a 42” flat screen TV. Half the takings went on rent and food, the rest made her flight and treatment possible.
Here in Bangkok she’s way out of her comfort zone but hates being dependent more. Apart from her diabetes she’s active, healthy and runs a lot. She manages to maintain her blood sugars around 6.5 to 7 but has frequent lows. She injects 8 units of the long acting NPH daily and, depending on food intake, may take 2 units of Novlin Rapid.
To be continued….
Chapter 2.
Protocol which Loredana underwent:
Day 1: Full pathology report and medical examination. Day 2: Human stem cell growth factor. Day 3: Human stem cell growth factor. Day 4: Mesenchymal umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells via IV administration, along with human stem cell growth factor. Day 5: CD34 umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells via subconjunctival administration. Day 6: CD34 umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells via subconjunctival administration. Day 7: Mesenchymal umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells via IV administration, along with human stem cell growth factor.
Lori’s long term aim is to get back on the rails and earn a living. She’s a graduate and determined to do something useful that involves writing.
We will follow her progress with great interest in the hope that she is one of the majority who gain some or significant improvement from adult stem cell therapy. Such grit and determination should be rewarded, but she is aware that the word cure is never used and holds firm to her belief that she did the right thing.
2 weeks ago……Chapter 3.
Updates on Lori:
I have some great news to report to you about both my sugar levels and my eyes. My blood sugar levels are back into the proper control and actually I have noticed that I no longer need to take the fast acting insulin that I would normally take before every meal. That's great to me because I have eliminated having to take so many injections in one day , although I am convinced the cells have a big part in this success, I also believe that my new diet that I have been following religiously has a lot to do with it. I have eliminated all carbohydrates and pay very close attention to the sugar intake in every food I eat. I have also been able to get back to my routine of being active and running daily which i am really happy about. In terms of my eyes I have not yet gained any sight, and believe me if I did you would be in my top 5 people to contact and share the great news with! My mother though has noticed that the color in my bad eye has become darker. The eye before making my trip to Bangkok was going through a fading stage and the pupil was completely gone. The eye color itself was a very pale yellow green and as I mentioned no pupil, we have noticed that the color is starting to go darker instead of continuing to fade lighter. This is good news to right? I am thinking that if I continue to stay positive and think that i will have success that soon I will have regained my sight. I am really hoping it will be before my 25th birthday because I would really love to spend my birthday doing something great for the first time in the four years I have been blind!
I often have to remind myself that it’s not been that long since I have left Bangkok, and that patience is the biggest factor in this procedure which you would think i have a lot of being that I have been waiting 4 years alone just for an opportunity like this to come along. I will continue to keep you updated with all changes and success
Please tell everyone I say "hi" and wish patty (nurse at absolute medical center) Lots of love from me! She was so great to us when she helped us around that day! Thanks again for everything, and we'll keep in touch!

Inger - ALS
Reason for treatment: Inger was hoping for improvement in her breathing ability, food intake due to massive weight loss through inability to swallow, strengthening in her muscles and one day to be able to speak again.
Treatment started: November 2008
Before stem cell treatment:
A newly retired Norwegian woman, Mrs Inger Marie Larsen, was looking forward to taking it easy in her new home in Sweden, enjoying life and indulging in her passion for travel. It was not to be.
Around October 2007 she noticed her voice was becoming hoarse, she experienced back pains and over a six month period lost some 20kg. After a battery of inconclusive tests her doctor appeared to her to have given up and after all she could still speak! By June 2008 she had a new doctor, further tests in Norway and finally a diagnosis of ALS. By then she was getting worse daily and troubled by spasticity in her hands. By July she was unable to speak at all. Told that there was no treatment in the whole world that could help her she froze, thanked the doctor and walked out.
Her journey to Bangkok for treatment with stemcells21 started with serendipity – her daughter Kristine had a work colleague whose mother had the same condition and this colleague had done a lot of research into ALS and the latest in treatment for it. Despite their shock, fear and depression the snowball started to roll. They were running out of time as Inger continued to lose weight, had swallowing difficulties and needed to be fed by gastric tube. Kristine acted and got in touch with the company in Bangkok that her colleague had found. The decision was rapidly made in spite of them being given no guarantees that the patient would improve.
From her hospital room in Bangkok where she had spent 28 days intensive therapy - including multiple injections of stem cells, physical and occupational therapy, lung and oral therapy and acupuncture – Mrs Larsen was all smiles.
After treatment:
During the treatment Inger started taking the steps towards talking again, she still has along way to go but she was becoming more vocal. We noticed she was breathing with more ease.
The day before her return home Mrs Larsen was delighted with her stay in Bangkok. Her oxygen capacity had leapt from 60 to 99 percent, she could breathe easier, her muscles felt stronger and she was now taking 400 ml of her liquid diet four times daily, versus only 250ml previously. Overall, she just felt much better. Asked if she would recommend stem cell therapy to others with ALS she smiled, gave the thumbs up and wrote, “Without hesitation”.
We will be following up with Inger on a regular basis to see how she is, if the is more improvement or not. we will update this section as and when we communicate with her.
Susan - Mulitple Sclerosis
Reason for Treatment: Susan hoped to reduce her tremors, so that she could walk better (without the need for a walking stick or something to lean on) and also so that she could write legibly. She also hoped to speak better after treatment.
Treatment: Umbilical Cord Stem Cell and Nerve Growth Factor Injections with Rehabilitation Therapy
START OF TREATMENT: February 25, 2007
Before Treatment:
Susan had very bad shakes that affected her walking and hand coordination. She had to walk with a walking stick, often needing to lean on available objects or surfaces around her. She had poor balance, and found it difficult to turn as a result. She could hold things in her hands, but could not write properly – she had to dictate any written messages to her children. She suffered from double vision. She also had problems with bowel and bladder control.
After Treatment:
Susan began to see improvements within six days of her treatment. Her balance, vision and bowel/bladder control all improved in a very short time. By the end of the treatment, she felt there had been several significant improvements. Her shaking was much less of a problem than before. Her bladder control had improved, so she no longer had to worry about waiting to use the toilet. She could write slowly but legibly, and so no longer needed to rely on her young children to write for her. Her legs were stronger. She could now walk more easily without needing to lean on things, and could even walk short stretches without the use of a stick.

Calsun - Autism
Reason for treatment: Calsun has autism and showed signs of it from when he was two years old. His family described him as being in his own world and not communicative with others.
Treatment: Umbilical Cord Stem Cell and Nerve Growth Factor Injections with Rehabilitation Therapy
Start of treatment: January 2, 2006
Before treatment: He was not communicative with others. He seldom spoke when spoken to or made eye contact with others. When you waved at him, he would not wave back.
After treatment: (January 22, 2006)
He became more sociable and made more eye contact than before. When you spoke to him, he would speak back to you which he would not do before. When you waved at him, he would wave back to you. These changes occurred by the fourth injection. The family was happy but is hoping for more as the doctors have told them that more improvements should happen in the following two months. We will check in with Calsum in March.
May 29, 2006 Update:
Visiting with Calsun at his school while he was taking music class and spoke with his mother, Mrs. Wang- Since the treatment his mother has felt that he has made many improvements. The first is that he can speak in complete sentences with ten words or more instead of using one or two words. The second is that his attention span is better so that instead of having to be taught one-on-one, he can sit in a class and learn with other normally developed children. However, he is eight and most of the children in his class are 6 or 7. He also can now take care of others. His mother said that one day there was a class on helping others and when he got in the car that day on the way home, he helped his younger friend buckle his seat belt. He has also been chosen to have a part in a movie about a kids football team. Mrs. Wang said that none of this would have been possible before. The encouraging thing is that she said that since the stem cell treatments, the progress is continuing at a steady level and has not leveled off yet. However, she still would like to go for more treatments to try and making greater improvement. Calsun has still not reached the level of being able to play interactively with other children so she is hoping with more treatment, that he may eventually be able to get there.

Bianca - Cerbral Palsy
Reason for Treatment: Due to lack of oxygen during childbirth Bianca was born with Cerebral Palsy characterized mainly by mental retardation.
Before Treatment: Before the treatment Bianca was very dependant on her mother in all daily activities – eating, dressing, tying her shoes, going to the bathroom and walking. Bianca could walk only with someone supporting her on one side and holding her hand. She could point to something but could not grasp small objects. She could pronounce a few words but was unable to create sentences. She could understand commands of medium difficulty. She appeared to have double vision and had difficulty focusing her sight. She was very anxious around people she didn’t know and in unfamiliar environments and would express fear and/or uncontrolled aggression in such situations.
Her main dysfunction was cognitive and emotional.
After Treatment:
After the treatment Bianca was able to walk by herself for a short distance and was less dependant on her mother in her daily activities. She was able to go to the bathroom more independently. She was also able to grasp small objects, which allowed her to start learning to eat by herself.
She showed a greater calmness and ability to learn, she also was more open to communicating with others. She was less anxious and fearful from the closeness of her environment. She could look straight ahead at eye level and further away while walking, while before the treatment she was always looking downward and wouldn’t look straight ahead.
While still having difficulty focusing her sight, if an object was given to her, she would take it which she would not do before the treatment.
Her new ability to learn, to better communicate and to control her emotions are the most significant improvements noted.
NAME: Bianca Caprioru
COUNTRY: Romania
AGE: 17
DIAGNOSIS: Cerebral Palsy, Ataxia, Dysphasia, Mental and Emotional Retardation.
Karen - ALS
Reason for treatment: Karen was diagnosed with ALS in May 2006. Her condition rapidly deteriorated ever since. Diagnosis: ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
ALS, is a progressive, fatal, neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. The disorder causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body. Start of treatment: 4th June 2007
Treatment: 4 injections of neural stem cells through the spinal cord fluid + nutritious intravenous cocktail treatment (IV).
Condition before treatment:
Karen was diagnosed with ALS only one year ago. Her condition since then has deteriorated to the point that she could no longer use her arms and legs, and had to use the help of caregivers for all her personal daily care, helping her in washing, dressing, getting in and out of bed. While being dressed up, or forced to do big movements, she suffered great pain in her muscles.
She needed someone to feed her as she did not have enough strength to bring her hands to her mouth, she could not hold a cup of water, or even turn the pages of a book.
Her voice was getting weaker, and her speech was slow and difficult to understand.
She did not have enough strength to hold herself sitting on the bed or lie down from sitting position without help.
Her neck muscles were very weak and her head was falling backwards while she could not bring it forward on her own.
Her legs were weak and stiff and she suffered frequent cramps and twitches. She could lift her legs only few inches high from a sitting position.
She could not walk anymore or stand without support, and used a wheelchair for transportation.
After treatment:
Karen started to slowly show improvements few days after starting to receive a daily nutritious cocktail through IV. She then continued to show improvements along the 6 weeks of her treatment.
Her hands and arms were the first to respond to the treatment; her fingers, that before were closed inside her palm, opened up and straightened. Before the treatment her arms lay in her lap and she could hardly lift them up. After the treatment Karen could lift her arms to chest high, and was able to resist to a light pressure with her arms.
Her legs got significantly stronger; she could now lift them from a sitting position almost to knees high, she could put more weight on her legs while trying to stand and eventually – walk. The cramps in her legs were almost gone.
Since her muscles got stronger, and were now more open and flexible, she could hold herself in a sitting position on the bed without support, she could participate more in the process of dressing up, washing up and transportation from one place to another; and the muscle pain that she suffered during these activities was greatly reduced.
Her neck muscles got stronger and she could now control her neck movement, bringing her head backward and forward by herself.
Karen’s voice had little improvement of getting louder and stronger, and her speech, though still slow, could be better understood.
Karen’s condition will be monitored carefully in the coming months. She was recommended by the doctors to come back for another treatment.
